How the calculator works

  • Add VAT: enter a net amount, get the VAT and gross total.
  • Remove VAT: enter a gross amount, get the net and VAT portion.
  • VAT only: enter a net amount, get just the VAT figure (without the full breakdown).

What is VAT?

VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax charged on most goods and services. It's collected at every stage of the supply chain — every business adds VAT to what it sells and reclaims VAT on what it buys — but the final consumer ends up paying it.

More than 170 countries use VAT or its equivalent (called GST in some places, IVA in others). The rates vary widely: from 5% in the UAE and Canada to 27% in Hungary. Whatever country you're invoicing in, this calculator handles the math.

When to add VAT vs remove VAT

The two most common questions freelancers ask:

"I need to charge a client £1,000 — what do I invoice?"
You're starting from a net amount and adding VAT. Use Add VAT mode. At 20% UK VAT, the invoice total becomes £1,200 — £1,000 for you, £200 for HMRC.

"My client paid me £1,200 — how much was VAT?"
You're starting from a gross amount and removing VAT. Use Remove VAT mode. At 20%, the calculator shows £1,000 net + £200 VAT.

The math feels obvious in either direction, but it's easy to mix up — especially when you're working across multiple countries with different rates. That's what this calculator solves.

How this calculator handles different countries

Every country with a dedicated page on this site has its current rates, registration thresholds, and tax authority info verified directly against the official source — HMRC for the UK, the BZSt for Germany, the FTA for the UAE, and so on. The "verified" date on each country page tells you when it was last checked.

For countries without a dedicated page yet, you can still use the calculator with a custom rate — just select "Other country / custom rate" from the dropdown and enter the percentage manually. Works for any country in the world.

Frequently asked questions

Is this calculator free?

Yes. Always free. No signup required.

Are the rates accurate?

For the 8 countries with dedicated pages (UK, Germany, France, Ireland, Netherlands, UAE, Bangladesh, Australia), rates are verified against the official tax authority and dated. For the 41 other countries in the dropdown, rates are listed from secondary sources and clearly marked as not yet independently verified — confirm with the country's tax authority before relying on them for anything important.

Is this the rate for personal or business use?

Both. The standard VAT rate is the same regardless of whether the buyer is an individual or a business. The difference is what happens after: VAT-registered businesses can usually reclaim the VAT they pay on business expenses, while individuals cannot. The calculator handles the math — what you do with the result depends on your situation.

Can I use this for VAT returns or tax filing?

This is a calculator for quick math, not tax software. Use it to work out invoice amounts, check your numbers, or estimate what you owe. For actual VAT returns, use your country's official filing system or accounting software.

Why isn't my country listed?

The 49 countries currently in the dropdown cover most major economies. If you're in a country not listed, use the "Other country / custom rate" option to enter your own rate. If you'd like a dedicated page for a specific country, email me and I'll prioritize adding it.

Is this tax advice?

No. This is a calculator and educational content. For advice on whether you need to register for VAT, what rate applies to your specific products or services, or how to handle cross-border situations, talk to a qualified accountant or your country's tax authority.
